i don't know a thing about asian americans in general, but i do know that filipinos are typically "social conservatives." my parents were immigrants and had a "pull ourselves by our boot straps" mentality, and i'm definitely influenced by it quite a bit.

but yes, i think the author still ignores the societal element, and i also don't think that education is THE solution to the problem, though i would definitely figure education as a large part of the overall solution. it's tough, however, to succeed without the piece of paper, and so that's why i think education should be emphasized above all else; how one succeeds in gaining knowledge from their education, however, depends solely on their appreciation of education... and this, i believe, is where the societal influences arrive.

excellent, i'm thinking about what i've said before, and my current views on the entirety of postmodern/poststructuralist critique (which, to me, seems to be the central doctrine in feminism.) i'll shore up a post about those views within (hopefully) the next few days, and you'll see why my replies and posts have been fairly... it probably was an opportunistic attack, but in many ways, i almost wish that this blog concentrated more on providing critiques, and not of the rhetorical kind that's provided in the videos and whatever else so far.

i apologize for being "unfriendly," but i'm not entirely conceding my position, and i'd love to, in fact, get in a more fruitful conversation, regardless on whether i agree with your guys' positions.

however, i'm here again going against what you suggest to argue for, which is the premise that emotion and reason could intermingle and provide a respectable argument. are you claiming, then, that if say a proposition P was uttered with emotion F, then another time, was uttered with emotion G, then they ought to have differing truth values? like, for instance, if we have a propositon such as,

does the truth or falsity of such a claim change when it is uttered by a person with emotion F or G?

Yes. Some universities probably would spend money on it to keep with affirmative action and also as a marketing ploy to NOT seem against a group. Hence, rational and logical to improve (you may not agree with the word choice of improve) a University by funding/allowing something they may not believe in. Example: Seattle University a Roman Catholic university allowing the Vagina Monologues on campus.

i think, in my opinion, why people cannot take most feminist views with any seriousness is because (to me) it's EXTREMELY anti-intellectual. to put it even more bluntly, a lot of what's being said on behalf of feminism sounds like a lot of whining, not well thought out argumentation.

i personally can't take any position seriously when logic is replaced with pure passion and citations from "authority."

find your personal take on disney discrimination both humerous, but fascinating at that. the reason young women feel so pressured to be the perfect damsels today, in my opinion, starts as a child plus the garbage they are exposed to. the fact that disney does not seem to have one average sized, healthy built defined beauty as the main character, children must believe the reason is because that really is not, well, beautiful. funny fact, what i wrote before this was quite similar to my sisters comment before i read it, "the females to have a stick waist and a big chest." but i didnt want to bore you by repeating what was already there(: hahahaha. but im glad there are people like yourself and your friend to be able to see issues in depth and be so very driven to be able to open a blog as well as organized as this one. keep up the good work ill be eagerly reading your new entries(: -grasomes.

I actually did a paper on the topic of physical image portrayed in Disney movies in high school. It is a very interesting thing to see that in children's movies. I remember when I was a little girl obsessed with Disney movies and I always drew pictures of my favorite characters, I always drew the females to have a stick waist and a big chest. It wasn't intentionally, but it ended up coming out that way. It's really frustrating to see that in movies, especially movies that are made for young children. It's like where did all the average sized people go in the movie? It's either they are in the background and not one of the main characters.

And about the commercials and ads from Dove~ it's such a great thing. I saw the commercial on television and I was amazed because I really don't think parents see the stress their young children go through to live up to the expectation of the "perfect image" that society has. It's sad. Like my mom, she is so blind to it all when it comes to my little sister. And I really think my sister would of handled things better if someone would talk to her about the issue. People always say just be yourself and don't worry about how others think of you... that's not really an easy thing to do. I really think Dove is sending out a great message by making commercials like that.

this is one of the main problems i have with how politics is conducted nowadays: since a lot of the layman politics is now televised on TV, the discourse takes on an additional role of visual advertising while shoving everything else in the background. as a result, we see elections lost due to someone forgetting to put makeup on themselves on the day of a major debate (nixon?), politics hinged on one sentence quips (since TV, as a medium, cannot hold one's attention long enough if there is ACTUAL lengthy intelligent discourse), etc.

the fact that such comments on TV exist about women is simply a corollary to this, which, to me, is quite disappointing.

i don't know though, i'm still a bit on the fence about this whole thing with the media. i've personally stopped watching TV, but i don't know if i'm simply trying to impose some sort of way of living life (like, reminiscing about the "golden age" of just reading books, etc.), or if there's really an intellectual threat from TV commentary.
